It's all part of The Assault On Marriage and the De-Christianisation Of Society.

"Huh?" I hear you say. Well, isn't it bloody obvious that marriage is just a long-term prostitution contract? The woman provides sexual gratification in exchange for the protection that only a heterosexual man can provide. So there's somegood grounds on which to get the religious extremists and far right to back the ancient institution of prostitution, and consequently, New Tory are guaranteed to Leave Our Traditions Alone.

Errm, your traditions, not ours. I've never needed a hooker.

I am mightily relieved. I had begun to doubt the merits of Simon Myerson and CharonQC but now I realise I was mistaken. Clearly, and putting on my IP lawyer hat, allowing airheads like Harriet Hymen to be QC - whether honorary or otherwise - dilutes the brand.

Despite all that, I do think your news that Dame Vera Lynn is to be a QC is thoroughly deserved: without her we would all be speaking German now.

She used to be Solicitor General, a position which attracts the dubious (but entirely ceremonial) honour of being appointed a QC. No long application process, no judicial references, no application fee. Vera's been given the same thing.
