EC Rambus and ‘patent ambushes’

Props to Rupert White at the Law Society Gazette for making Geeklawyer aware of this:

The EC has raised an objection under anti-trust law against Rambus for engaging in a patent ambush. This has been very controversial. Rambus kept a patent secret to allow others to adopt its technology as a standard and then once it is embedded as an industry standard suddenly say:

“Oh oops by the way, we forgot to mention this is all patented & you owe us a gazillion dollars in royalties. “

Slimy sociopathic behaviour. And the EC is now calling them on it. More later.
