Geeklawyer blogged back in January about this bit of uber cool kit but had reservations. These had grown in the intervening months with rumours of 45 minute battery life, slow connection speeds, inability to add third party apps and so on. The situation in America with the grotesque AT&T phone contract tie-ins seem to beggar belief - huge non-recoverable deposits lengthy contracts etc. etc.
Well, the speculation ends and the reality begins. And it is looking good. Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal has had one for two weeks and his review is balanced but glowing. Most of the ‘issues’ turn out to be non-issues. Battery life is stunning and Apple’s claims look very accurate. The user interface is, as one expects from Apple, stunningly effective and usable (with a couple of kinks); overall a huge innovation.
The usual caveat on Apple products is to wait for version 2. If the eventual European release of the iPhone has 3G and a reasonable contract Geeklawyer will very probably get one to augment his spiffy Nokia N95 (which has a sucky battery life but which is otherwise a magnificent phone).
