There is no good American beer. Belgium may be a mere smudge on the map compared to the USA, but they have worked out what should be done with hops yeast sugar and water.

Ruthie, American insularity is only about 95% our fault. We have limited diversity in neighbors, limited interest in the arts and the origin of Western ideas, and limited curiosity about things outside our consumer culture. So what are the good American beers?

No doubt, like 90% of your fellow countrymen, you do not possess a passport, have never left the country and are therefore prepared to drink the pondwater that they dish up in bars in America, because you know no other...

Even I think American beer is shite, and thats saying something. Beer "lite" whats that about? Err beer is made from sugar, ergo beer without sugar tastes like urine. If you don't want the calories drink water. But this is the country that buys bottled tap water...

Certainly we can brew crap beer too and do. But, with the exception of some West Coast microbreweries, my experience of American beer was that it was weak flavourless urine. An American acquaintance had the theory that it was because American's drank and drove - I have no idea.

It certainly took an enormous number of cans of Coors or Bud or Ol' Redneck, or whatever the fuck it was, to get me smashed.

Not that I want to get into a row with a beer geek - we have some good Camra pubs down my way so I have a passing acquaintance with decent beer such as Hophead and Spitfire.

I have some American beer at home and must say that it is a good imitation of the sort of ale brewed in good old Blighty. I trust that Dan Hull can bring some more with him next time he visits.

I think you need only see Dan Hulls comments (reproduced in the updated podcast post) to understand the caveats on that aphorism :)
