The ship is sinking. The last time Geeklawyer was on a sinking ship was in his younger days, shortly after he’d been asked to pass on a message to the captain: “Nice Bird ahead” and it was true she was jolly fit, but not a patch on Ruthie.
As the ship slipped beneath the icy waves Geeklawyer had a ‘Doh’ moment in his lifeboat: he realised that “Iceberg ahead” was the message he’d been asked to convey. Embarrassing. Geeklawyer felt sympathy for the captain of the Titanic he recalls.
Similarly, Geeklawyer is in a slightly awkward position at the moment. His professional circumstances have become somewhat ‘challenging’ through no fault of his own and the ship is sinking. The heroic thing to do would be to muck in and bail water as fast as possible. Instead he has decided to bolt and make a run for new chambers in London and leave the women and children to drown.
Which leaves Geeklawyer back where he was many years ago: writing groveling letters to chambers asking if pretty pleased they like a new tenant. Geeklawyer is usually treated as if he had asked them if they wanted a tub of his bronchial leavings. How very depressing its somewhat like being a pupil again. The impression he gets is that most tenancies seem to go to pupils, even Geeklawyer’s modest following doesn’t seem to be getting him the traction he’d hoped for with prospective sets.
It would be great if he could say “I am Geeklawyer, yes the Geeklawyer. Why of course I’ll consent to be head of chambers.”
I rather got the impression that most tenancies did not go to pupils, especially at the swankier sets who want tenants to have life experience and added value.
Being treated like floor sweepings is par for the course. Its tradition. Dont take it personally.
If you agree to become head of chambers they’ll take you like a shot. Seriously, who would want that job?
Course when you do get a tenancy you’ll have to do lots of work to prove yourself. And keep Ruthie in the style to which she has yet to become accustomed.
If I do get a new tenancy I’ll probably want to trade up
I reckon you’d fetch £50 on ebay
