Geeklawyer is pretty much unimpressed by the Windows Vista publicity blitz hailing the new release of Microsoft’s new Vista operating system: yea, the visuals look pretty slick at least based on the publicity seen so far, but he’ll reserve judgement until he’s seen it running and decide if its significantly better than OSx. He doubts it.
All the stuff Bill Gates was waffling about seemed to be a straight up rip off off from OSx or Linux: dynamic searching of hard disk file content (Spotlight/Beagle), sidebar (Dashboard), transparent windows & dynamic effects (Aqua/Beryl) - and so on and on.
As for the claim that it is the most secure operating system yet released … What?! OSx Linux BSD all run rings round its security. More secure than previous Windows version maybe.
Worst of all though is the DRM. Geeklawyer is probably one of very few IP lawyers who thinks this is a sucky idea both on principle and in practice. This OS is going to scan the system every 30 milliseconds to check if the user is doing anything the record companies don’t like. The idea of an operating system burning up my resources to support a broken business model is laughable. Vista may well be the death knell for the concept of DRM in practice - a system that tells you you can’t install software or get decent performance because Microsoft or the RIAA think you may be a copyright infringer will never win the love of its users: but that is, of course, the benefit of having a monopoly.
