Kuwaiti women participating for the first time on the 29th June in municipal elections expressed their concerns about discrimination suffered by women in other countries. Said one anonymous Kuwaiti woman “we are grateful for the opportunity to participate equally in elections, however we are aware of an organisation in England, the AELTCC, that continues to publicly discriminate against women. We can only hope in time that this organisation will see sense and value the role of women.”
The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club offers a total prize pot to women which is £472,300 less than the aggregate offered to men. They seek to justify this decision on the grounds that women only play 3 sets compared to 5 for men. Women (sorry lady) players have indicated they are quite happy to play 5 sets and physically are perfectly capable of doing so. Last years women’s final lasted 45 minutes longer than the mens game. £472,300 is small change to the All England Club, therefore the gap can only be explained by a dogged desire on the part of the club to mark their belief in the inferiority of women.
Given the popularity of tennis with female viewers perhaps some kind of protest or boycott to drag the All England Club into the 21st Century might be mustered. Substituting Vimto for the Pimms should be sufficient to send this bastion of the Establishment into meltdown.
