Football

Well dammit,

As expected and predicted by Geeklawyer England went out on penalty points 3-1 to Portugal in a 0 - 0 game.

While disappointing, if not exactly unexpected, it will at least allow Geeklawyer to suspend his quadrennial interest in soccer. He will now revert to the love of the only ball sport acceptable to heterosexual men: rugby.

So relieved that England have finally gone out. I know thats not very sporting but I’m sick to death of all the hype, and consider footballers overpaid prima donnas. What will Chinese flag manufacturers do for a living now?

I don’t know whether the rugby is going to offer much greater joy just at the minute. I went to the England Australia game a couple of weeks ago, and I can’t say that the performance was one to inspire hope. If they don’t get any better, we can look forward to them going down in a hard fought game against the Cook Islands come next year’s world cup.

The cricket doesn’t look to flash either, perhaps the whole sporting thing should be left well alone.

At least with English v Antipodean rugby (cricket etc etc ) you know in advance the English are going to get a stuffing so one is well psychologically insulated from the inevitable. And it was quite a pleasure to see the Aussie football team take a hiding (in fact the did rather well but they didn’t get through) so most Englishmen took a measure of revenge in that.

But we can at least whoop aussie arse in tiddlywinks
