Turns out there’s a bunch of Irish boys punting a DVD cloning program. Geeklawyer regards this sort of utility as god-sent given the high price and scratchability of DVD’s. Ripping them is an entirely morally acceptable activity.
Unfortunately, it is unlawful in the UK. It is almost certainly going to be in contravention of the DMCA and its retarded EU cousin the EUCD both of which outlaw the selling of copyright circumvention devices. DVDs come with copyright protection technology built in and many such utilities strip out these protection codes. Legitimate and harmless, for the most part, says Geeklawyer.
Some firms such 321 Studios sold such programs for a while a couple of years ago but the MPAA Death Star made short work of them, and numerous others. The received wisdom is, therefore, that while suicide is painless it can also be expensive prolonged and not, in reality, that painless.
The Slysoft boys say of their program:
AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie …
…backup the movie using a DVD backup tool such as CloneDVD and CloneDVD mobile. You can also remove the RPC region code, thereby making the movie region free and viewable on any DVD player and with any DVD player software …
… AnyDVD is capable of removing unwanted movie features, including subtitles and prohibition messages such as copyright and FBI warnings.
Having spent memorable and enjoyable holidays in Ireland, Geeklawyer will grieve over the smoking hole that will shortly replace Slysoft’s HQ in Cork.
Farewell then boys: hope the craic was worth it.
