Blinded by the light

Over on Techdirt Geeklawyer reads of a new product to spoil surreptitious picture taking by zapping a blinding laser light into the hidden lens. It does this by detecting the laser light bouncing off the reflective layer on the electro-optics. Naturally one thinks of patents but these days academics are on the phone to their patent lawyers before anyone can say “hey, you, PhD student can you check these results?”.

No, Geeklawyer was, erm, reflecting that red-eye in photos is caused by the reflection of light off of the retina. So if the product detects light reflected off the said retina and zaps a searing blast of monomode into it eeek! …
Geeklawyer senses a brilliant opportunity for his PI colleagues. What’s an eye worth these days, he’s lost his Kemp & Kemp? Clearly some due diligence testing is needed: “hey, you, PhD student can you come over here a moment?”. Well, it would be cruel to use a rabbit.

Anyway, that’s more than enough optical puns.
