Well, it’s that time of year again. Another UK digital rights organisation, the Open Rights Group, has been formed to campaign against the excesses of the government and their commercial masters. The group seeks to:
- raise awareness of digital rights in the media,
- connect the media with those expert enough to give a digital rights based perspective instead of the usual politicians and corporate apologists,
- involve the general public in digital rights issues,
- extend civil rights into the digital domain,
- network with other such groups.
Issues to be tackled so far include data retention laws, privacy, intellectual property laws and other worthy matters.
Leading lights so far include Cory Doctorow, Sue Charman, Danny O’Brien and other unspeakable subversives. The group hopes to be a sort of UK EFF before it morphed into a litigation monster. Not that that’s a bad thing in the impartial view of Geeklawyer but it takes resources that are not yet available (you can help by signing the pledge).
Geeklawyer will, of course, be happy to help out the Open Rights Group, and any other underdog for that matter. But only underdogs OK? There’d be too much risk of winning otherwise.
