Via the writetothem.com web site I wrote the following to my MP. Not polite or constructive & I make no apologies: ID cards are an affront and I am angry (I also don’t believe it will make any difference so I don’t care).

Dear [New Labour Sheep],
I am deeply concerned at your parties proposal to introduce identity cards in this country. They will not achieve any of the aims your party claims for them: they won’t reduce social security fraud costs, limit illegal immigration reduce crime or terrorism. What they will do is to introduce a New Labour system of making the people accountable to the government rather than vice versa. This attempt by your party to construct a loyal citizen database with its ID card front end will mark a further attempt by your party to curtail our civil liberties.
I notice your record on writetothem.com indicates that you strongly support this attack on your constituent’s society and rights. I would ask you nonetheless to vote for what is right, rather than what you think is advantageous to your political career. When herded towards the voting pens by the whips/sheepdogs can I ask you to do something non New Labour? jump the fence and vote against ID cards.
I will vote at the next election very largely on this issue. Your share of the vote plunged from 48% to 35% at the last election. Can I suggest to you that spitting at your electors now, will not assist you in the next one?
Yours sincerely,
…
